Brands We Trust
The lock hardware Ray actually installs, recommends, and stakes his reputation on after 15 years in the field.
Not every lock brand is created equal. After installing and servicing thousands of locks across Greater Boston, we have strong opinions about which manufacturers build hardware that actually protects your home and business. Every brand on this page is one we carry in our van and install with confidence.
We reference ANSI/BHMA grading standards throughout this page. Grade 1 is the highest commercial rating for durability and security, tested to withstand 800,000+ cycles. Grade 2 is heavy-duty residential. Most consumer-grade hardware is Grade 3.
Medeco
High SecurityThe gold standard in high-security lock hardware. Medeco cylinders use patented, restricted keyways with rotating pins that resist picking, bumping, and drilling. Key blanks can only be duplicated at authorized Medeco dealers, giving you true key control. When we install a Medeco deadbolt, unauthorized key copies become virtually impossible.
Best for: Homeowners and businesses who want the highest level of physical security and key control available.
Independent review: This Old HouseMul-T-Lock
High SecurityAn Israeli-engineered lock system that uses a unique telescopic pin-in-pin design. Each key pin contains a smaller pin inside it, effectively doubling the number of combinations and making the lock extremely resistant to picking and bumping. Mul-T-Lock also offers interactive keys with a movable element that adds another layer of bypass resistance.
Best for: Commercial properties, property managers, and high-value residential applications where maximum pick resistance is critical.
Independent review: ANSI/BHMA StandardsSchlage
Professional GradeThe workhorse of the professional locksmith industry. Schlage uses solid, traditional pin-and-tumbler cylinders with hardened steel construction. Their commercial B600 series deadbolts are what we install most frequently for residential upgrades. Their smart lock line (Encode Plus) is one of the few electronic locks we recommend because it uses the same Grade 1 pin-and-tumbler hardware, not fragile wafer systems.
Best for: The best all-around choice for Boston homeowners who want proven, durable hardware at a fair price point. Also our top pick for smart lock hardware.
Independent review: Consumer ReportsYale
Professional GradeOwned by Assa Abloy, the world's largest lock manufacturer. Yale produces both traditional and electronic locks backed by over 180 years of manufacturing experience. Their Assure Lock 2 key-free smart lock eliminates the exterior keyway entirely, removing the physical attack surface that makes most smart locks vulnerable. Their commercial cylinders are solid, reliable, and widely serviceable.
Best for: Customers who want smart lock convenience without a physical keyhole on the exterior, and commercial installations requiring Assa Abloy ecosystem compatibility.
Independent review: WirecutterBaldwin
Architectural GradePremium solid brass and forged hardware built for historic homes and high-end residential properties. Baldwin locks are heavy, precise, and finished to architectural standards. When a customer on Beacon Hill or in Back Bay needs hardware that looks as good as it performs, Baldwin is what we reach for. Their Prestige and Reserve lines use solid pin-and-tumbler cylinders.
Best for: Historic Boston homes, luxury renovations, and customers who want high-end aesthetics without compromising mechanical security.
Independent review: Architectural DigestAugust
Smart Lock (Retrofit)August takes a fundamentally different approach to smart locks: instead of replacing your existing deadbolt, it replaces only the interior thumb-turn. Your physical lock stays completely intact. We install August retrofits over Schlage and Medeco deadbolts to give customers smart features (auto-lock, remote access, guest codes) without weakening the mechanical hardware on the outside of the door.
Best for: Customers who already have quality deadbolt hardware and want to add smart features without replacing the physical lock.
Independent review: Tom's GuideWhat We Don't Recommend
We do not install or recommend locks built on Kwikset SmartKey cylinders. The SmartKey system uses thin, unfixed wafers and a reset carriage designed for consumer self-rekeying. While convenient, these internal components can be shattered with a simple force attack in under 15 seconds, leaving no visible damage on the exterior.
This includes many consumer smart locks from various brands that use Kwikset internals as their physical backup cylinder. If your smart lock has a small rekeying slot to the left of the main keyway, it likely uses this system.
